Biggest box office bombs revealed

The biggest box office bombs for 2023 have been revealed, with Disney dominating the list.

New data from Deadline reports that four Disney films ranked topped the list of movies with the highest studio net loss for 2023.

While the outlet reported that Disney typically “owns a majority of the year’s top 10 most profitable films thanks to Marvel movies,” that was not the case for 2023.

According to their calculations, superhero film The Marvels had a studio net loss of $A358 million, after only earning the franchise $71 million at the box office in its opening weekend, their lowest number to date.

In November 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger addressed the box office blunder at The New York Times’ Dealbook Summit, saying that because the film was shot during covid, “there wasn’t as much supervision on the set, so to speak, where we have executives [that are] really looking over what’s being done day after day after day.”

Deadline claimed that another reason why the film flopped was because it "was trying to thread storylines from Disney+ shows like Ms. Marvel," which wasn't as well-received by fans compared to other series like Loki and WandaVision.

Iger shared the same belief, saying that Marvel’s mass of content on Disney+ "diluted focus and attention," contributing to the franchise's failure at the box office.

The Marvels was followed by The Flash, a Warner Bros. and DC production with a $234 million studio net loss.

Three other Disney films also made the list, with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny coming in third place with a $216 million net loss, followed by Wish with a $198 million loss and Haunted Mansion with a $117 million loss.

Image: Getty

"Shameful": Betting company slammed for 9-11 themed "Never Forget" promo

DraftKings, a prominent sports betting company in the US, has found itself in hot water on social media this past Monday when it featured a parlay with a 9/11 theme on its mobile app – on the 22nd anniversary of the infamous terror attacks of September 11.

Social media users were quick to share screenshots of the DraftKings app late on Sunday night, revealing a parlay named "Never Forget". This special parlay entailed wagering on the New York Mets, New York Yankees, and New York Jets to secure victories on Monday, marking the 22nd anniversary of the tragic terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre.

The parlay's description urged users to "Bet these New York teams to win tonight on 9/11," drawing sharp criticism from the online community. Many expressed their disapproval of DraftKings seemingly attempting to profit from the solemn occasion.

The parlay remained accessible on the app throughout Sunday night and into Monday morning, further fuelling public discontent over the sports betting company's decision.

However, DraftKings eventually removed the parlay on Monday and issued an official apology for its inclusion. Their statement read, "We sincerely apologise for the featured parlay that was shared briefly in commemoration of 9/11. We respect the significance of this day for our country and especially for the families of those who were directly affected."

Bret Eagleson, who leads the 9/11 Justice organisation, an advocacy group representing families and first responders, strongly condemned DraftKings' offer as "tone-deaf".

Eagleson, whose father, Bruce, tragically lost his life in the World Trade Centre attacks, emphasised to the Associate Press: "It is shameful to use the national tragedy of 9/11 to promote a business. We need accountability, justice, and closure, not self-interest and shameless promotion."

DraftKings did not disclose how many individuals placed bets as a result of the 9/11-themed offer, leaving questions unanswered regarding the status of those wagers - whether they remain valid or if they have been cancelled.

Images: Twitter (X)

“Our Disney princess”: Grace Irwin’s magical milestone

Bindi Irwin and her family were all smiles on a recent trip to “the most magical place on Earth”, with some of their favourite highlights documented on social media for their fans to enjoy the occasion right along with them.

The day was something of a milestone for two-year-old Grace, who was making her first trip to Disneyland alongside Bindi and Chandler.

“Our Disney princess visited the most magical place on Earth for the very first time,” Bindi wrote. “My. Heart.”

In the clip accompanying the caption, a series of snaps and short videos played out, though two things remained constant throughout - the delight on their faces, and the wonder on young Grace’s.

It opened with a sweet family picture in front of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, a popular location in the centre of the park for capturing the all-important Disney portrait.

Next, Grace had been introduced to a bubble wand in her dad’s arms, before the family were captured flying through the air on Disney’s Dumbo The Flying Elephant ride.

From there, Grace was pictured exploring the park - on her own feet and from her mum’s embrace - as well as dancing to live music, meeting some iconic Disney characters, hosting her very own princess tea party, and experiencing the wonder of the world famous It’s a Small World attraction.

All, it appears, picture perfect items on any Disneyland agenda.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Why the 2023 Met Gala theme is already facing controversy

The theme for the 2023 Met Gala has been released, and is already causing controversy both online and within the fashion community.

The annual fashion event will coincide with the Met's exhibition titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, which will feature 150 pieces of clothing alongside Lagerfeld’s original sketches.

If you’re unfamiliar with Karl Lagerfeld, he has a long history in the fashion industry, culminating in being the creative director of Chanel, Fendi, and his own label.

Despite his hefty influence on fashion, Karl has regularly been the subject of many controversies, which have prompted a wave of backlash over his glorification in the form of the Met Gala theme subject.

In particular, his anti-fat language surrounding women's bodies has been called "cruel", as he even explicitly said, "no one wants to see round women" when the magazine Brigitte announced that it would use "ordinary, realistic" women over models in 2009.

Other controversial comments include calling Adele "a little too fat," Heidi Klum "too heavy," saying Pippa Middleton "should only show her back," and adding that Coco Chanel wasn't a feminist because she "was never ugly enough for that."

The designer also has a murky history with sexual assault, as he defended stylist Karl Templer after he was accused of sexual assault and said, "If you don't want your pants pulled about, don't become a model! Join a nunnery, there'll always be a place for you in the convent."

He also previously said he was "fed up" with the Me Too movement, and sent flowers to accused rapist Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

Lagerfeld also has a long history of racism, as he called Muslims the "worst enemies" of Jewish people in 2017 while criticising the acceptance of refugees in France, in comments that were reexamined after his death in 2019.

When the theme of the 2023 Met Gala was announced to be centred around Lagerfeld, many critics took to online spaces to express their anger and disappointment.

Actor and activist Jameela Jamil led the charge, saying, "This man...was indeed, supremely talented, but used his platform in such a distinctly hateful way, mostly toward women, so repeatedly and up until the last years of his life, showing no remorse, offering no atonement, no apology, no help to groups he attacked. There was no explanation for his cruel outbursts."

"Why is THIS who we celebrate when there are so many AMAZING designers out who aren't bigoted white men?"

"We didn't fight all this s*** just to throw it all away because some white guy made some pretty clothes for people's skinny [favourites]...come on now."

In the new Disney Pixar movie Lightyear, time gets bendy

Spoiler alert: this article explains a key plot point, but we don’t give away anything you won’t see in trailers. Thanks to reader Florence, 7, for her questions.

At the beginning of the new Disney Pixar film, Lightyear, Buzz Lightyear gets stranded on a dangerous faraway planet with his commanding officer and crew.

Their only hope of getting off the planet is to test a special fuel. To do that, Buzz has to fly into space and repeatedly try to jump to hyper-speed. But each attempt he makes comes with a terrible cost.

Every time Buzz takes off for a four-minute test flight into space, he lands back on the planet to find many years have passed. The people Buzz cares most about fall in love, have kids and even grandkids. Time becomes his biggest enemy.

What’s going on? Is this just science fiction, or could what happened to Buzz actually happen?

Time is relative: Einstein’s big idea

Buzz is experiencing a real phenomenon known as time dilation. Time dilation is a prediction of one of the most famous scientific theories ever developed: Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity.

Prior to relativity, the best theory of motion we had was Isaac Newton’s mechanics.

Newton’s theory was incredibly powerful, providing stunning predictions of the motion of the planets in our solar system.

In Newton’s theory, time is like a single giant clock that ticks away the seconds in the same way for everyone. No matter where you are in the universe, the master clock will display the same time.

Einstein’s theory of relativity shattered the master clock into many clocks – one for each person and object in motion. In Einstein’s picture of the universe, everyone carries their own clock with them.

One consequence of this is there is no guarantee the clocks will tick at the same rate. In fact, many clocks will tick at different rates.

Even worse, the faster you travel relative to someone else, the slower your clock will tick compared to theirs.

This means if you travel very fast in a spaceship – as Buzz does – a few minutes might pass for you, but years might pass for someone on the planet you left behind.

Time travelling forwards – but not backwards

In a sense, time dilation can be thought of as a kind of time travel. It provides a way to jump into someone else’s future.

This is what Buzz does: he jumps into the future of his friends left on the planet below.

Unfortunately, there is no way to use time dilation to travel backwards in time, into the past (as one important character talks about later in the film).

It’s also not possible to use time dilation to travel into your own future.

That means there’s no known way for you to travel into the future and meet your older self, simply by going really fast.

Time travellers above Earth right now

Time dilation might seem like science fiction, but in fact it is a measurable phenomenon. Indeed, scientists have conducted a number of experiments to confirm that clocks tick at different rates, depending on how they are moving.

For example, astronauts on the International Space Station are travelling at very high speeds compared with their friends and family on Earth. (You can watch the space station pass overhead if you know when to look up.)

This means those astronauts are ageing at a slightly slower rate. Indeed, US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, from whom Buzz in Lightyear gets his name, would have experienced a tiny bit of time dilation during his trip to the Moon in the 1960s.

Don’t worry, though, the astronauts on the International Space Station won’t feel or notice any time dilation. It’s nothing like the extreme time jumps seen in Lightyear.

Aldrin was able to return safely to his family, and the astronauts up in space now will too.

To infinity – and beyond

Clearly, time dilation could have a serious cost. But it’s not all bad news. Time dilation could one day help us travel to the stars.

The universe is a massive place. The nearest star is 40,208,000,000,000 km away. Getting there is like travelling around the world one billion times. Travelling at an ordinary speed, no one would ever survive long enough to make the trip.

Time dilation, however, is also accompanied by another phenomenon: length contraction. When one travels very fast toward an object, the distance between your spaceship and that object will appear to be contracted.

Very roughly, at high speeds, everything is closer together. This means that for someone travelling at a high speed, they could make it to the nearest star in a matter of days.

But time dilation would still be in effect. Your clock would slow relative to the clock of someone on Earth. So, you could make a round trip to the nearest star in a few days, but by the time you arrived home everyone you know would be gone.

That is both the promise, and the tragedy, of interstellar travel.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: YouTube

Inside the house where you can swing from room to room

Dubbed ‘Disney World for adults’ by the selling agent, the owners of this interesting resort style home have dropped the price by AUD $946,400 (USD$700,000) in hopes someone will finally buy the property after a long 18 months on the market.

Real estate agent Colleen Henninger of City Center Realty recently re-listed the unusual family home on real estate site Zillow, where it gained huge interest thanks to its design.

It’s a fusion between African safari, American wild west, Tarzan's lair and a ride at a Disney resort.

For AUD $1.6 million (USD $1.2 million ), the home could be all yours. The outside of this two-storey home features timber and rock walls, while inside you will find massive exposed timber beams, corrugated iron walls and wrought iron walkways connecting the rooms, which are separated by a massive internal void.

A life-sized carved timber elephant is on display in the downstairs living room, while a statue of a pirate guards the upstairs area.

There is also an elevated stage complete with drum kit and ropes to swing from end to end if you’re feeling like something different.

The three-bedroom, three bathroom home in the Los Angeles suburb of Lakewood, California, first hit the market in October 2020, with an asking price of USD $1.9 million (AUD $2.57 million). However, after failing to sell and a brief stint as a rental on Airbnb where it was leasing for USD $730 per night, the owners have decided to drop the asking price.

Henninger, who is a friend of the owners, says there had been a great deal of interest in the home, but the majority of those who inspected the property just wanted to look and had no intention of buying.

"It's a great house. It's like Disney World," she said. "It was built with fun in mind.

It's a unique home and it's going to need a unique buyer. You go in and you either love it or hate it. It needs someone who wants to entertain guests and have fun."

Of course if you do get bored, the home is within driving distance to Disneyland Resort, Anaheim which is a short 20 kilometres away.

Images: Domain

Natalie Portman's buff transformation stuns fans

Newly-released photos of Natalie Portman in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder film have left fans stunned at the superstar’s body transformation.

The 40-year-old mum is shown sporting ripped arms that could give co-star Chris Hemsworth a run for his money in the latest publicity stills released for Marvel’s next big screen outing.

Co-star Tessa Thompson is shown alongside the actress, looking equally buff, but it’s Portman’s transformation that’s caught every bodies attention.

She looks a world away from the actress best known for her roles in Jackie Kennedy or the doomed ballerina Nina in Black Swan.

Not everyone’s a fan, though: in an op-ed writer Fran Hoepfner lamented the fact that Portman was one of many acclaimed actors swept up in the Marvel universe.

“It’s impossible to believe that what people want from Portman … is for her to get jacked,” she wrote.

“Enough time has passed under the tedious reign of Disney’s superhero movies that we know legitimately great and versatile actors are wasted, smoothed out and plumped up, for less than ten minutes of screen time.”

Portman is one of many big screen stars to unveil their Marvel-facilitated superhero body transformations in recent years, among them Kumail Nanjiani and Chris Pratt.

Portman has previously opened up about the extreme measures needed to get superhero-buff for Thor, telling Jimmy Fallon it had been quite a shock after the inactivity of lockdowns.

Images: Twitter & Getty

Police under fire for blasting Disney songs during arrest

Police officers in a Californian town are being investigated after they were filmed blasting Disney songs late at night.

In a video uploaded to YouTube, police are seen searching an allegedly stolen car in the town of Santa Ana around 11pm.

After a few minutes, the officers notice the situation is being filmed, and one goes to a police car and turns on the speakers to loudly play You've Got A Friend In Me from the Disney film Toy Story in an effort to deter the filmer.

Other songs from Disney films Mulan, Encanto and Coco play next, as nearby residents are awoken from the sound and ask police to turn the music down.

They eventually do, but not before attracting the attention of one resident who is also a town councillor, identified as Jonathan Hernandez.

Hernandez asked the police what the reason for the music was, with one officer responding, “copyright infringement” while pointing to the person filming the scene.

This means if the video was posted online, it would be removed for playing the copyrighted Disney tracks.

Police in the US have previously been accused of playing copyrighted songs when being filmed by civilians.

Despite their attempts to thwart the video, it remains on YouTube and has amassed over 46,000 views.

"I'm embarrassed that this is how you're treating my neighbours," Mr Hernandez said in the video.

"There's children here."

Santa Ana Chief of Police David Valentin said in a statement that the police department was aware of the video, and that the incident was being investigated.

See the shrines to Harry Potter, the Avengers and Disney in a single home

Fans of Harry Potter, Marvel’s Avengers, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast might not find much to agree on usually, but one house in Florida is sure to make them all happy - if they have $8.23 million to spend.

Though it might appear to be a standard albeit large home with modern stylings at first glance, the two-storey home in Reunion, Florida contains homages to all three film franchises.

The lower level boasts an impressive dedication to the magical Harry Potter films - accessed by a rotating brick wall that reads “Platform 9¾” of course - with a full-size replica of the Hogwarts Express steam train that also contains a sleep carriage with two single beds.

Not only is there a full-size train, but the space also contains full-size recreations of Harry Potter, Dobby the House Elf and the Whomping Willow tree.

To finish it off, the area is completed by a train-themed bathroom with two frosted showers with quotes from the fictional character Albus Dumbledore.

As for Avengers fans, the home’s first-floor games room is the place to be. Arcade games lining one wall, a giant superhero mural covering another, and the fictitious group’s “A” logo on a third wall, while Avengers office chairs, a foosball table and an Avengers air hockey table fill the centre.

Elsewhere in the spacious home, there is a children’s bedroom styled to look like Belle’s room from Beauty and the Beast, complete with an appropriately-themed bathroom.

The rest of the eight-bedroom, 11-bathroom home features a sleek and modern design and a colour scheme of varying shades of whites, greys, and blues.

Other luxe features include the huge home theatre, swimming pool and spa, home gym, wet bar, rooftop terrace and an alfresco area with views of the private golf course.

Despite the sky-high price, as of publication an offer appears to have been made on the home, with the Zillow listing showing the property’s status as pending.

Images: Zillow

Two schools cancel their productions of Grease over its outdated themes

Two high schools in Perth have cancelled their upcoming productions of the musical Grease, after students have called out the "outdated" themes of the story.

Year 7 - 10 students from Scotch College and Presbyterian Ladies‘ College in the Western Australia capital were due to perform their rendition of the iconic musical later this month, but decided against it.

The young women involved in the production believed that the play was inappropriate for modern times, saying the themes of the show were sexist, offensive and anti-feminist.

The kids at Scotch College also agreed that a different production would be better suited to a modern audience, but a replacement musical has not yet been announced.

PLC Principal Cate Begbie and Acting Scotch College Headmaster Mr Peter Burt issued a brief joint statement about the decision.

“A number of PLC students raised concerns whether the musical was appropriate in modern times,” it read.

“Scotch College listened respectfully to the girls’ concerns and both schools agreed a different musical would be better suited for their joint production in 2022.”

The 1978 movie, based on the 1971 musical, tells the story of good girl Sandy Olsson and bad boy greaser Danny Zuko falling in love during a summer fling, and later finding out they go to the same high school.

In recent times, the movie has been called out for its outdated themes, as star Olivia Newton-John claimed critics need to take into account the times in which the film as made.

"It's a movie," the 72-year-old told The Guardian. "It's a story from the Fifties where things were different. Everyone forgets that, at the end, he changes for her, too. There's nothing deep in there about the #MeToo movement.

"It's just a girl who loves a guy, and she thinks if she does that, he'll like her. And he thinks if he does that, she'll like him. I think that's pretty real. People do that for each other. It was a fun love story."

“We can fix it”: Dad sparks debate over Disney book edits

A dad has sparked some controversy online after sharing edits to his daughter’s Disney Princess books to combat gender stereotypes.

The parent took to his TikTok account (@dcaspers) to share pages from his daughter’s “Step Into Reading” books starring Disney princesses and the edits he makes to inspire his daughters.

In one video of his now-viral series, he takes issue with a book featuring Ariel from The Little Mermaid. In it, Ariel struggles to bake a cake for Prince Eric, and @dcaspers is quick to change it.

“Ariel changes her body, leaves her friends and family … and now she’s baking, all for him,” he writes over the clip.

The dad then shows the changes he made to the book, swapping Ariel’s piping bag full of icing for a slice of pizza.

“Instead of baking, Ariel orders a pizza,” he writes.

“While the prince eats his pizza… with a fork,” he continues, “She finds her new love… in TikTok.”

Image: @dcaspers / TikTok

In another clip, the dad focuses on Rapunzel from Tangled and writes, “Teaching my daughters not to settle for the stereotypes”.

In the original reader, Rapunzel enters a pie-baking contest and wins a blue ribbon, “which her bf (boyfriend) approves” of. This is what we should teach our daughters, not that women do the cooking, cleaning and chores,” one commenter said.

“I honestly love this! I can’t stand stereotypes, and for Disney to use them when most little kids look up to/love them is awful. You’re amazing,” another wrote.

“What’s wrong with baking? And how is spending all your time on social media better than a fun activity that anyone could do?” one person argued, referring to the Ariel video.

“The baking is a metaphor here. She pursued a goal, and achieved it successfully, while being cheered on by a loved one.. How can you see the bad in this?” another said, challenging his Rapunzel edits.

“Bruh, just don’t buy the book if it offends you,” a third user suggested.

In response to the critics, one person wrote, “Why is everyone upset about a dad wanting to teach his daughters to be strong and independent?”

Despite the controversy, this dad has shown how he wants to challenge the messages and stories his daughters see and gone the extra mile to do it.

Image: @dcaspers / TikTok

Watch award-winning Nomadland on Disney+

Nomadland won three Academy Awards this year - for Best Picture, Best Director (Chloé Zhao) and Best Actress (Frances McDormand).

The director - Chloé Zhao - has made a film with heart and passion and by choosing Frances McDormand to play the lead role, she made sure all this passion was conveyed so well.

The movie revolves around Fern (played by McDormand), who, following the economic collapse of a company town in rural Nevada, packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. McDormand produced the film as well, along with Peter Spears (Call Me by Your Name), Dan Janvey (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Mollye Asher (The Rider), and Zhao (The Rider).

Aademy Award nominee David Strathairn stars as well (Good Night, and Good Luck), along with actors Swankie, Bob Wells and Linda May, all of whom appeared in Jessica Bruder’s acclaimed book, which Zhao adapted for the screen.

Zhao directed and edited the film, with Joshua James Richards (God’s Own Country) serving as the Director of Photography and Production Designer. The movie’s sound team was M. Wolf Snyder (The Rider), Sergio Diaz (Roma) and Zach Seivers (Assassins).

More on the awards

It was special to see Zhao make history by winning the award for Best Director because in the Academy’s 83-year history, she is only the second woman and the first woman of colour to ever receive this award.

Frances McDormand won an Academy Award for Best Actress in the movie and this is her third time winning such an award. McDormand is a well-established actress known for her meaty roles – for example, Fargo, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing and Missouri.

Where you can watch Nomadland

You can watch Nomadland on the streaming platform, Disney+, and on Star - the new entertainment brand, launched as part of the Disney+ platform earlier this year.

Nomadland is streaming now on Disney+ on Star…

Photos: Disney+
